SYMPTOMS OF ANXIETY:
Anxiety can cause many different symptoms. It might affect how you feel physically, mentally and how you behave.
It's not always easy to recognise when anxiety is the reason you're feeling or acting differently.
Physical symptoms:
faster, irregular or more noticeable heartbeat
feeling lightheaded and dizzy
headaches
chest pains
loss of appetite
Mental symptoms:
feeling tense or nervous
being unable to relax
worrying about the past or future
feeling tearful
not being able to sleep
Change in behaviour:
not being able to enjoy your leisure time
difficulty looking after yourself
problems concentrating at work
struggling to form or maintain relationships
worried about trying new things
avoiding places and situations that create anxiety
SYMPTOMS OF A PANIC ATTACK:
If you experience sudden, intense anxiety and fear, it might be the symptoms of a panic attack. Other symptoms may include:
a racing heartbeat
feeling faint, dizzy or light-headed
feeling that you're losing control
sweating, trembling or shaking
shortness of breath or breathing very quickly
a tingling in your fingers or lips
feeling sick (nausea)
A panic attack usually lasts 5 to 30 minutes. They can be very frightening, but they're not dangerous and should not harm you.
ANXIETY TREATMENT:
The world health organisation also have a great article on Doing What Matters in Times of Stress: An Illustrated Guide is a stress management guide for coping with adversity. The guide aims to equip people with practical skills to help cope with stress. A few minutes each day are enough to practice the self-help techniques. The guide can be used alone or with the accompanying audio exercises - https://www.who.int/publications/i/item/9789240003927?gclid=CjwKCAiAz4b_BRBbEiwA5XlVVkn5D2ddOUvbusOAxf-9fhgmYg0dwLXDkG1icCFUgljq8_FNM1ZuxhoC_-IQAvD_BwE
STAYING OFF YOUR MOBILE PHONE & SOCIAL MEDIA:
Repetitive habits also include your social media activity and the apps that you use. You could try minimising push notifications on your phone from apps or switching off from social media and having a mini technology detox. I’ve got some tips in a video on how to stop using your phone and social media from a previous video I made: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_pUd3bpx0k
WHEN TO SEEK MEDICAL ADVICE FOR ANXIETY:
If you need more support, you can get free psychological therapies like cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) on the NHS.
You can refer yourself directly to an NHS psychological therapies service (IAPT) without a referral from a GP from the following link: https://www.nhs.uk/service-search/find-a-psychological-therapies-service/
See a GP if:
• You're struggling to cope with anxiety, fear or panic
• Things you're trying yourself are not helping
• Having continuous negative thoughts or any thoughts of self harm or suicide
• You would prefer to get a referral from a GP
Ask for an urgent GP appointment or call 111 if:
• You need help urgently, but it's not an emergency
Call 999 or go to A&E now if:
• You or someone you know needs immediate help
• You have seriously harmed yourself – for example, by taking a drug overdose
A mental health emergency should be taken as seriously as a medical emergency.
