WHAT IS CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME:
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is pressure on a nerve in your wrist. It causes tingling, numbness and pain in your hand and fingers. You can often treat it yourself, but it can take months to get better.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF CARPAL TUNNEL:
The symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome include:
• An ache or pain in your fingers, hand or arm
• Numb hands
• Tingling or pins and needles
• A weak thumb or difficulty gripping
These symptoms often start slowly and come and go. They're usually worse at night.
CARPAL TUNNEL TREATMENTS:
Carpel tunnel sometimes clears up by itself in a few months, particularly if you have it because you're pregnant.
Wear a wrist splint:
A wrist splint is something you wear on your hand to keep your wrist straight. It helps to relieve pressure on the nerve.
You wear it at night while you sleep. You'll have to wear a splint for at least 4 weeks before you start to feel better.
Stop or cut down on things that may be causing it:
Stop or cut down on anything that causes you to frequently bend your wrist or grip hard, such as using vibrating tools for work or playing an instrument.
Painkillers:
Painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen may offer short-term relief from carpal tunnel pain.
But there's little evidence to say they can treat the cause of carpal tunnel, so it's important not to rely on them.
As always with all medicine always read the information leaflet and speak to your pharmacist first before taking any medication to make sure your safe and suitable to use it.
Hand exercises
In terms of hand exercises there is a small amount of evidence that they can help ease the symptoms of carpel tunnel syndrome. Aim to do them 2-3 times a day and I guess everyone can do them at home.
Please do try these exercises to help ease pain and prevent future injuries and lets us know how you get on by leaving a comment below. I guess we can do our own YouTube experiment to see just how effective the exercises really are.
WHEN TO SPEAK TO YOUR DOCTOR:
I really hope my tips help you in this video but please remember if your symptoms of carpel tunnel syndrome are,
• Getting worse
• Not going away
• Treatments arena helping
Then please speak to your healthcare professional and get it checked out.
