Serious side effects from sildenafil are rare, occurring in fewer than 1 in 1,000 people. Stop taking sildenafil and contact your doctor or call 111 immediately if you experience a sudden decrease or loss of vision. Seek urgent medical attention by calling 999 or going to A&E if you have a seizure, a prolonged or painful erection lasting more than 2 hours, or chest pain—especially during or after sex. If you’re on nitrates, do not take them to treat chest pain.
In rare cases, sildenafil can cause a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis). Call 999 or go to A&E if you suddenly experience swelling of the lips, mouth, throat, or tongue, rapid or difficult breathing, a tight throat, difficulty swallowing, or if your skin or lips turn blue, grey, or pale. Other signs include confusion, dizziness, fainting, or a child becoming limp or unresponsive. A rash that’s swollen, itchy, blistered, or peeling could also indicate a severe allergic reaction, requiring immediate hospital treatment.
