NECK PAIN:
A sudden onset of neck pain or stiffness is actually quite common in fact 2 out of 3 of us will have neck pain at some point in our lives.
So in most cases neck pain is not due to serious disease or neck problem quite often the exact cause of the pain is not clear and we call this nonspecific neck pain.
The most common causes are:
• The neck becoming locked in an awkward position while sleeping
• Bad posture – for example, when sitting at a desk for a long time
• A pinched nerve
• An injury – for example, whiplash from a traffic accident or fall
WHEN TO SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION FOR NECK PAIN:
• Pain or stiffness does not go away after a few weeks
• Painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen have not worked
• You're worried about the pain
• You have other symptoms, like pins and needles or a cold arm – this could be something more serious
NECK PAIN RELIEF:
So how can you ease the neck stiffness or pain yourself? Well the first thing you should do is try either a heat or cold pack on your neck. So you have two options, option 1 get a hot water bottle wrap it in a tea towel and leave it on the area for 20 minutes, try and do this 2-3 times a day and be very careful you don’t burn yourself.
Option 2 grab a pack a frozen vegetables for example frozen peas wrap it in a tea towel and leave it on the area of 5 minutes 3 times a day.
The next thing to do that I would highly recommend are the 4 simple neck exercises demonstrated in the video because you really need to stay active. And I know you’re probably thinking to yourself Abraham you must be joking my neck is so stiff I literally can’t move it. And I get it, I’ve been there too but please remember bed rest for more than a couple of days can actually make it harder to get going again, so gradually increase normal activities and do the following regular exercises to the extent that you can.
Now in non specific neck pain these exercises should help ease the pain within 2 weeks and you should recover in approximately 4-6 weeks. You should also try and use the suggested exercises for at least 6-8 weeks this will help prevent symptoms returning.
However if your symptoms aren’t improving as explained at the start of the video you should definitely make a visit to your doctor. I have also left a full list of when you should visit your doctor towards the top of the description which I'd highly recommend everyone reads.
Another useful tip is to use a low, firm pillow as quite often large pillows can be the cause of neck stiffness and pain. Also please remember if you can’t move your neck properly it’s really important not to drive, cycle or do any activities that need complete neck movement as you’ll be putting yourself and others at potential danger.
HOW TO PREVENT NECK PAIN:
There are various things you can do to help prevent getting neck pain or a stiff neck in the first place. These are explained in detail towards the end of the video and I hope they help you.
